‘Gabriel Oak’ is the name of a rose created by David Austin whose love of literature and poetry often inspires the naming of his roses.
The Gabriel Oak rose takes its name from one of the most memorable characters in Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. Gabriel Oak is a hardworking shepherd and farmer, known for his quiet strength, loyalty and enduring love for Bathsheba Everdene. Despite hardship and disappointment, he remains steadfast and connected to the land around him.
David Austin named this beautiful deep-pink rose after Hardy's character in 2019, making it a particularly fitting name for a rose that has such a rich, romantic presence. My original painting was created in acrylic ink as a commissioned piece, inspired by the striking colour and wonderfully full, many-petalled blooms of this beautiful rose. I wanted to capture not just the shape of the flower, but the depth of colour, layers of petals and lush greenery surrounding it.
